Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Enhanced (CBT-E)
We specialize in CBT-E – an effective and targeted Eating Disorder Treatment for older Teens and Adults seeking recovery and freedom from an Eating Disorder and negative Body Image. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Enhanced, or CBT-E is one of most effective treatments we have today for the treatment of eating disorders. It is a Transdiagnostic method for the full range of eating disorders – anorexia, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and related body image conditions. It a targeted, time-limited treatment that lasts for 20 – 40 Sessions depending on severity of symptoms. It was developed as an outpatient treatment for adults by Christopher Fairburn, MD, at the Credo-Oxford Institute in the U.K. Dr. Riccardo Dalle Graves, MD is the developer of the adapted version of CBT-E for Adolescents that utilizes family support. International research has shown the success and efficacy of CBT-E. An important study compared CBT-E with interpersonal therapy (IPT), also a leading treatment for adults with an eating disorder. At post-treatment, 66% of the CBT-E participants were in remission from their eating disorder, compared to 33% of the IPT participants. Over the follow-up period, the CBT-E recovery rate remained higher than IPT (69 versus 49 percent). Embarking on CBT-E, begins with a full evaluation and exploration of one’s eating problems .CBT-E is a protocol that helps to develop a highly personalized road map to recovery. Collaboratively, CBT-E therapists and client create a formulation of the individual’s unique eating and body image problems. Treatment progresses through four distinct stages, to effectively identify and tackle the underlying thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that contribute to and sustain the eating disorder, such as food restriction or Binge/Purge Cycles. Treatment can include Exposure Work for “fear foods” , strategies for urges to binge or purge, and addressing underlying issues of negative body image, poor self-esteem, and clinical perfectionism. Family-Based Treatment (FBT)
FBT, or the Maudsley Approach, is the Gold Standard treatment for Pediatric/Adolescent Eating Disorders. FBT treats your loved one in the Least Restrictive Environment – your home! Around the world, Family Based Treatment is considered to be First-Line-of-Treatment for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders, particularly for early onset Anorexia, Atypical Anorexia, Bulimia, and ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). FBT, or the Maudsley approach, is a Gold Standard treatment. FBT is a culturally-sensitive method that keeps a child in their family environment. In the FBT method, the parents play a major role in the re-nourishment of their starving child, under the guidance of the trained and certified Family Based Treatment practitioner and in medical collaboration with an outpatient Pediatrician or Adolescent Medicine Specialist. The child, adolescent, or young adult, and his or her parents, are carefully screened to be appropriate candidates for this protocol, conducted in the Least-Restrictive-Environment – your home! At Resilience, Barbara Reese and her team practice the formal FBT protocol, including caregivers and siblings, with certification from the Training Institute of Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders. The FBT protocol, developed at the UK’s Maudsley Clinic, consists of around 20 sessions and differs from traditional eating disorder treatments that rely on insight and motivation. FBT acknowledges anosognosia, a condition where individuals don’t recognize their illness severity. Parents don’t cause eating disorders but are crucial allies in recovery. FBT leverages parents’ knowledge and awareness to counteract the effects of anosognosia. Anorexia, a brain disorder, responds better to initial nourishment to restore brain function than to insight-driven treatments. FBT is a a well-researched protocol. It is best when practiced adherently and adherent does not mean rigid. It means using interventions with the highest probability of success and not wasting precious time with interventions that are known to delay or interfere with recovery. Your FBT provider is an experienced therapist and family therapist who will follow your childs individual progression thru the 3 stages of FBT:
